Tweed handbags

A fall and winter staple. Tweed bags are great, though some designer versions require vigilance [ie. Chanel’s famous tweed flaps and Boy bags.] There are classic brands like Harris Tweed, or you can jump into designer brand tweeds if you want a more modern style of bag shape.

Kurt Geiger and Tory Burch have also done tweed bags, as have typical stores likes J. Crew. If you haven’t tried a tweed bag yet, consider getting a vintage or preloved one online to see if it fits your style and lifestyle. Even Dior has jumped into the fray. In terms of being classic, Chanel’s tweed flaps do stand out, but of course they are often heavily logo-ed [except the Reissue bags of course.]

Be sure to think about what you usually wear before you get a tweed bag — is the bag’s plaid/print loud and needs neutral clothes to shine against? Or is it able to blend in with your outfits?

LV has a rare Capucines tweed bag, but whether you want a designer bag in this instance is another thing to consider. While tweed is very hardy, designer bags usually aren’t. Be ready for your bag not to hold up looking perfect if you go the designer route.

For some reason I always find using a tweed bag makes me feel more prepared to brave the cold, which is obviously nonsense, but it’s true nonetheless!

What’s good at…

Today we’ll look at what’s good at Burberry. The brand has obviously not recovered from it’s chav past but does have some great modern designs. If you are into logomania, new or old for them, check out their new TB monogram and TB purse clasp. If you like the old plaid/check print you can snap up old items on vintage/preloved sites all over the web for cheap–and there are modern options as well.

If you prefer more staid, old fashioned purses, there are several options.

If you would like an obvious logo that’s a little quieter than usual, the soft leather totes have the name of the brand [and origin] pressed into the leather [same color as the bag so it blends in.]

Their Title bags, zipped totes, zipped satchels, Note crossbody bags, Banner bags and leather Belt Tote bags are an option that have only a small golden pressing of the brand name. So does their Camberley bags.

A logo that’s a bit bigger comes on the large Grace shoulder bags. As you can see below, they have a bag for Game of Throne fans of Arya’s adventure in the House of White and Black. As well as a tweed offering for the tweed crowd. I do prefer a more compact tweed though, but I like the idea of more people and designers including tweed bags in their collections.

An oldie

Is this bag too retro to wear unironically? I love it but am afraid it’s quite old fashioned at this point: the marshmallow cream/white vernis LV bags. They come in different, yet rather close colors.

I love every version, every shade that’s even close to this. They came in many different versions, like the Blanc Corail Sherwood, the Marshmallow Reade, the Perle tote, the Alma, the Alma Blanc Corail, the Wilshire tote, the Bedford bag, the Maple Drive bag, etc. I love the classic Brea Blanc Corail bag — I believe Sophie Shohet on Youtube used to have it.

The only thing to be wary about is the fact that some of the bags have darkened over time, it seems. Some don’t seem to have. The other obvious issue is how easily these bags are marked up and damaged in a way that’s almost impossible to repair, as far as I know.

Addicted to no logo but want a designer brand name?

There comes a pause when someone gets into no logo bags — there are cheap average ones, direct designer-inspired ones, and very high end ones. I didn’t realize at first that there are a lot of options in the designer bag world for no name bags.

Often people feel they have no choice but to jump up to the level of The Row [fine, but it’s a particular aesthetic] or Nancy Gonzalez [also great but a very limited/classic aesthetic that’s almost all crocodile skin bags.]

Obviously bags of every level fill different purposes, whether it be aesthetic ones, matching with your particular outfit or style, seasonal, climate/location, event or type of work. In this post the point is to think about what designer options exist for those that prefer no obvious/visible logos on their bags.

One such option is the LV Glacier Taiga Roman bag–much like a small messenger/shoulder bag, it has quite clean lines. The only issue is that the strap has LV printed on it and some of these have an ‘LV’ embossed subtly in the lower right-hand corner of the front flap.

Another bag to look at is the LV Utah Kiowa tote. It has great, old-fashioned design and is very practical in design.

For a tote more in the style of the LV Neverfull or Goyard St. Louis tote, Ferragamo has a great option with it’s canvas totes. It has some plain, neutral colored ones.

So close and yet so far

There are many bags that are almost appealing but have a little flaw…. today the bag on my mind is the Dior Diorever [in the larger sizes.] It is very appealing despite the lack of crest on the shield-shape portion [I would love if they’d done some ‘blank’ and let you customize your crest [whether at Dior or at a metalworkers!]

Opening it is far too much of a procedure, and the two ‘dots’ on the front of the flap distract from the bag’s clean lines. The way the top flap is cut around the handle is not elegant at all. The flap can ‘snap’ on the front/back but it still looks too odd for me — I think the flap should be totally removed and the bag remade slightly differently.

Shape problems?

Many people have a hard time picking out a bag [no matter what the occasion/need is] because they can’t find a shape that appeals to them. Many big name brands stick to the same shapes and their new ones are either too futuristic [Prada Sidonie bags and LV’s wave bags] or too ’50s cosplay [some of Mansur Gavriel.] Don’t get me wrong, I’m often in the mood for those two types of bag styles, but not always.

A great place to look through loads of styles quickly is Nat & Nin. They have a very large amount of styles, from the Art Deco Flora bag to the more professional, stalwart, satchel-like Nicole bag.

Above the Flora is the fan shape on the left, and the Nicole is the satchel down below.
